A great BIRTHDAY for Eli... number 9. The kids waited for the most important appearance of the day and when they arrived, they did not disappoint!

Eli and I have been having a great time on the Navajo Reservation in Arizona. I am shooting a children's book here and Eli is making friends with all sorts of creatures. The puppy at the house where we are staying, Reena, is a special friend. She has run the mesa with Eli most every evening as they race and zig zag up the dusty trail to the rock formations (now known as Eli's rocks). We will never forget her or the amazing hosts and friends we have met here! An ode to dogs and friends all over our world!

When teacher Steve Brand died at Christmas time last year, he left behind his wonderful family, including some great young daughters and he also left a void at Chapman Elementary school where he taught. Now, that Chapman community is honoring him, and his love of soccer, by raising money to pay for a turf field to be installed at the school. As a friend of Steve and his family, I photographed kids playing soccer in the rain and mud today to highlight the awful conditions at Chapman and at most Portland schools in spring. Good luck to the effort. I hope to see the field next year!

Almost exactly 2 years ago, on a road trip thru California, I stopped at a homeless encampment in Sacramento that had just hit the news with a visit from Oprah and other national media. I met some wonderful people who had lived there for many years. One of the residents, Robert Burgins, and I spent some time talking about his life in the past and how the media had changed the view of his current "home" The encampment was closed by the city several days later and all of the folks moved on. Last week while photographing the Portland cityscape, I ran into Robert! He was still homeless but was using services to find work and was in good spirits. Nice.

A year of ups and downs for our family is ending. I have had great adventures with my work and with my boy. Lesson learned, over and over, NO Expectations. Curve balls of life seem to have been the norm in 2010. Am I stronger or more skittish? Will I continue to have adventures or take the safe route? Will I find more peace in my parenting or more confidence in a new path for my art? I just plan on taking one step at a time and seeing where it leads. Lucky to have such a beautiful boy with me on the journey!

One thing is for certain... I am sure I will continue to make an ASS of myself from time to time... just hope I can have fun doing it.

It has been a while since I last wrote in you diary (I mean blog). I have had a great Autumn shooting! Spent many days in the vineyards with farm workers harvesting the crop of grapes for Oregon wines, see the images here. A nice shoot with the wonderful team at Umpqua bank's Learn To Earn program at several schools... I also had many family shoots. It is so nice to see many of my same families every year, watching kids grow up in real time and capturing it. Photographed an amazing Portland potter and also a cool conifer farm out to the east. Much more to come in 2011!

Search for Butch and Sundance

Ever since I mentioned I was going to Bolivia, I have heard every sort of comment urging "Please look for Butch and Sundance!" Well, I think I was on their trail as we visited the most remote and wonderful mountain towns of Samaipata. Their old VW bug was parked there with a fancy paint job. The pizza restaurant, run by a wonderful German family, was certainly a watering hole. I can only imagine them as carpenters building western style furniture and gates for locals and touristas. I want to spend more time here, maybe I will stumble upon them in the town square.

On our first leg of our vacation/work trip. Eli took this iPhone photo out our window... a prop plane to Seattle. His first prop. Weird what the speed of the prop and the speed of the hipsta does to a full speed prop. We will be posting over the next months wherever our adventure takes us.

Last year we had the pleasure of spending our Memorial Day holiday with a great group of families at a Buddhist family retreat on Vashon Island in Washington State. The folks from the Puget Sound Zen center are great friends! My son Eli loved the sitting and chanting and tea service... all around being part of the ceremony, the chores and the community. The idea of introducing your religion to your child is daunting. My feeling being that I want him to choose his own path. Hopefully as we grow as a family, he will be exposed to various religions and spiritual paths and will be able to see if any fit into his life.

Had a great shoot in Napa and environs last week. So nice to work with an amazing designer and wonderful client. The shoot was mostly done with my DSLRs but very fun to add some hipsta prints to the mix.

With all of this talk of golfers in the news these days...
I recently did a shoot, for Sports Illustrated magazine, of golfer Michelle Wie. Michelle is another athlete who became a star, or at least a media name, at a very young age. She has gotten some bad press about being difficult etc....
I photographed her on the Stanford campus where she goes to school. I found her to be open and charming and a pretty happy college kid. I hope the limelight treats her well.

The beach clean-up was a huge success. We had wonderful images from around the world sent in to Aurora. I edited around 2000 images from the day!

I camped out at the beach the night before in order to arrive close to sunrise at Ft Stevens State Beach in N. Oregon. A beautiful beach with actually not alot of trash. I think Americans are doing a better job at keeping our beaches clean than in the past...at least in Oregon. It is seriously sad to see any trash on our beaches tho! Here is a little friend I met on the early morning beach... Nice little surprise.

A year ago I read a story about an ocean clean-up, organized every year, by the Ocean Conservancy. I was impressed with their project and appalled to hear that the largest amount of pollution in our oceans was cigarette butts. I knew I wanted to do something. Well ...cut to this year's ocean clean-up and I have now partnered up the Ocean Conservancy and my agency Aurora. We have 23 photographers, around the world, documenting the clean-up to create an amazing document of the project. I am excited to shoot at the Oregon Coast and to edit images from photographers in Brazil, Singapore, The Philippines, India and many locations in the US among others.

Here is an image from a beach in the Dominican Republic as it stands today before we document its' clean-up on Saturday. Think about this beach before you throw your cigarette butt in the gutter or don't recycle your plastic.

There is still time to find a local clean-up and volunteer to help!!

Had a magical weekend photographing the new branding campaign for Burley Trailers. The sun punched thru at exactly the right times and the "real" models were a pleasure. Great working crew! I taught a class in "street photography" last weekend at Newspace Center for Photography.

It really helped ME learn more about the history and styles of street photography. To look at work by street photographers around the world was quite a didactic journey. A video of NY photographer Jeff Mermelstein was a big hit in the class. The students were amazing and the work they produced, under less than optimal conditions, was inspiring. As the teacher, I may have learned more than anyone. I learned that street photography is often about attitude, how you present yourself, how you embrace an event and how open you are to new experiences and people. I wish I had some of the work by the class to show... but alas, only a few images of mine.

I recently got an email forwarded to me by my Uncle. It was a listing of all of the money our country spends on "illegal aliens" and their children. A couple of the "facts" the author wanted pounded across to the American public were info about the billions of $$ spent on illegal school children who "cannot speak a word of English!!" also, "nearly one million sex crimes were caused by illegal immigrants in the US"

I don't know why I was on the forward list for this hatred but it is sometimes a wake-up call to see into the dark underbelly that is focusing so much energy on the wrong people. We have had immigration laws in place in this country for many, many years. It has been beneficial for the rich to have workers come into the US to work in our feilds, clean our houses and basically support the backbone of our country so the rules were overlooked... but now the backlash is ...well... embarrassing. I had a shoot at a local organic farm, recently, and photographed some of the workers who were there well before I arrived at 5:45 AM. They did back breaking work picking beautiful crops and when I left around 10 they had hours of work ahead of them (in 106 degree heat). Maybe we can get some of the rich college students who are on summer break to help them out. Wanna volunteer your child?

A powerful woman passes.

A sad day, amazing memories.

The time I spent with Cory Aquino as she led a campaign...no, a movement... to become the President of the Philippines was life changing. Traveling the country, documenting the movement, the people and the elections afforded me the access to President Aquino and found her loving, real and dedicated. It was exciting to see the light she brought to the people of her country, the hope that remained after the departure of Ferdinand Marcos. I wish her peace.

Was lucky to spend another year with my son camping on his birthday. We visited the Mt Lassen Volcanic Park in Northern CA. A highlight was a hike to Bumpass Hell a surreal site of extreme hydrothermal activity. A stinky, sulfur, steamy land of heat. A great place to let my boy practice his photographic skills. He loved the old skool feel of the Mamiya 6. I can't wait to see the black and white images he took. I promised to take him to the darkroom so he can print them himself.

I am working on a new section for my website called "vintage." I will put up, for a limited time, a section of images from the past... Think it will be fun, might just be wierd.

This image is from the 1986 Filipine Elections. I was traveling, on this day, with Imelda Marcos as she campaigned on Iloilo Island. She was an icon of the times... the hair, the nails... the shoes.

It was an amazing event right before the election and the fall of the Marcos regime. The days that followed were surreal for me, the country and the world. On election day ballot boxes were stolen by Marcos thugs in outlying barrios and the thugs opened fire on our small group of photographers covering the chaos. It made me realize I was not cut out to be a revolution or war photographer... but the time was exciting and the images always bring back the memories to all of my senses.

Following along the food chain... I have been very interested in stories about where our food comes from. From salmon caught fresh by the Columbia River Indian fishers to Sauvie Island organic U-pick strawberries to "artisan meats", there are alternatives to buying your food from factory producers. A good friend, Aaron Silverman, has started an artisan Pork company (Tails and Trotters) featuring hazelnut fed pigs. I photographed some of the butchering process including superstar chef Morgan Brownlow who was doing the butchering along with the Gonzales father and son team.

Do I long for the days of serious photojournalism? Traveling to far off places at a moments notice....Being in the middle of the story of the day? Of course. It is in my soul. I see my peers doing amazing work and sometimes I wonder what direction my career will take. I often miss being connected in the old way. I am missing out on all of the stories and great images while I focus on parenting and a different style of work for now.

But... here are some things I really would miss if I did not have them in my life.

Picking strawberries on Sauvie Island, on a Friday morning, and getting caught in a downpour.

Listening to a boy and his squeaky violin play "Twinkle, Twinkle" over and over.

Volunteering to teach photography to a rowdy group of 1st and 2nd graders.

Planning a birthday camping trip, way in advance, and knowing that I will honor the commitment I make to go.

Sitting naked on the bathtub with a naked boy while we let the LICE shampoo take effect.. who thought having a child with lice would be a bonding moment?

Tucking my boy in bed almost every single night of his almost 7 years.

Growing and harvesting beautiful lettuces, tomatoes, carrots and broccoli and watching my son eat them raw from the garden.

Driving 10 minutes, after supper, for milking time so we can milk the goats who give us incredible raw milk every week.

Being a soccer coach to a rag-tag group of novices.

and.. Sharing slideshows of amazing work done by my friends and peers in photojournalism who are some of the most inspiring people I could introduce to my child.

Local, neighborhood, friends....It was so nice to work with a friend who is an amazing acting teacher and who puts on local theater. We created 3 images to go with her plays for the upcoming season.

Her studio, Shaking the Tree, is a wonderful organic space for kids to express themselves. 3 beautiful child actors who were so easy to work with. It don't have to be fancy!

I am excited to be opening a show of a group of portraits I shot over 3 months on a street corner. Alberta Street, here in Portland, has a street fair on the last Thursday of every month. The scene there is so uniquely Portland. People dress up in costumes, eat fire, play music, sell their art and basically have a street party every month. I set up a 9 ft seamless backdrop on a street corner and created a little studio for myself among the chaos, the wind and the masses. People were excited to pose. I found if I just told people to stand on a spot and be themselves, without directing them in any other way, amazing insight happened.

Yesterday I spent time, on the Columbia River, riding the sea lion hazing boat with Indian fishers from CRITFC . The men were shooting off bombs and large underwater firecrackers trying to convince the sea lions to head back out to the ocean. The controversy is heated here in Oregon and Washington.

The sea lions aggressive... the Tribes determined... the salmon endangered. No clear solution to the debate. The tribes depend on the salmon run to feed their families and even they are torn as to how to handle this problem that was created by the building of the Bonneville Dam.

I am heading out to the Klickitat River today to photograph the fishers.

No sea lions were injured in the taking of these photos.

Spending the weekend on the beautiful Vashon Island, at a Buddhist family retreat overlooking the Puget Sound, we discussed the intertwining of good luck and bad luck. Sometimes things we think of as bad luck lead us in a direction toward good luck. I had a chance to experience this philosophy on our trip back from the Island.

We were directed to the Southern tip of the Island to catch a ferry that would take us South of Seattle and save us about 45 minutes driving. Good luck!! I was happy to shorten my 3 hour drive home but...When we arrived at the ferry, it had just left and we had to wait 45 minutes for the next one. Bad luck!! (although we had a great time snacking and telling really bad jokes in the car)

We finally got on the ferry and were parked behind a wonderful family including Vi (age 10) and his adorable baby brother. They were enjoying the beautiful day while crossing the Sound. Great luck!! Such a nice moment. Sometimes it just works out that way.

I had an Easter treat to be invited to the traditional Salmon ceremony on the Cililo Indian reservation. This ages old tradition brings the Yakama, Warm Springs and Umatilla tribes together to honor the first Salmon of the season. The tribes practice the Washat relgion inside their longhouse (no photos allowed) and then serve a feast of traditionally prepared salmon, venison and roots. The tribes have had fishing rights on the Columbia River for generations and are now praying for many salmon to return to sustain their families. The nets look like a waterfall to me... so appropriate at the site of Cililo Falls.

Sometimes serendipity is the best form of research. Next to our campsite, at Joshua Tree, we met a group of amateur astronomers setting up for the night. They were obsessed men with a bunch of big glass. When they had aligned with the North Star and the sun had gone down, Eli and I went over for a lesson and some magical moments. Eli, being a big fan of Orion, got to see, close up, the belt and the sword. We were called from telescope to telescope to see Nebula and Galaxies and the most amazing of all Saturn. Our main teacher was a man named Louie Luna... serendipity indeed. Thanks guys!!!

As part of a project, we made a stop at "tent city" in Sacramento. This homeless encampment on the banks of the American River has been in the media spotlight recently ....even making it to Oprah for a story about how the economy has been creating a new homeless population.

When I first arrived (and almost got arrested by the park police, and the railroad police, for driving my car onto private property) I found that my initial skepticism turned out to be basically valid. This was not a new "tent city". Many of these folks had been there for months or years. This is their home. Most have drug or alcohol addictions or are criminals and cannot hold a job or housing. These are not Joe and Mary homeowner...now in foreclosed upon and out in a tent. I felt that many, especially the national media, had really mis-represented this story.

I did not have much time to spend as we were on the road and my 6 -year- old was happily locked in the car watching a movie. But I did meet some passionate and charming people out there. Most were sick of the media, one told me to come back after his channel 10 and channel 5 interviews this afternoon. I heard the story of the CNN cameraman who got punched because he lacked common decency and respect of privacy. Did I do any better? I know I did not shoot alot of images but spent most of my time listening to stories and hoping I was not lumped in with some of the other media who the residents felt intrusive.

I hope that my images will help. A few folks said that, even tho the story was mis-represented, they hoped it would help make some positive changes. I hope so too. And I hope it does not get more crowded out there.

It has been too long since I posted last. Not alot of shooting...mostly learning video editing, putting together my son's class photo book and finishing up my new website. Will have lots to post in the coming weeks. This photo take in 1985 in the Philippines. I was covering the Marcos/Aquino campaign and election. As international journalists tend towards... very bazaar partying occurred after hours. The Hobbit House in Manila proved to be quite an interesting distraction to a very exhausting story to cover. My son, and others, told me this photo was a bit scary. I just remember it as being a blast! Thanks to Karen T. for the print after all these years. Thank goodness someone is organized!

It was wonderful to be a part of the do1Thing project last week on Valentines day. I met up with a 20 year old boy who I had photographed a month earlier. Kyle has spent his life, since age 7, in a variety of foster and group homes. He never had a normal childhood or teenage life. It was so heartwarming to watch him button up his wrinkled, too small suit. He was outside, downtown, in the cold...putting on a suit to go to a dance for recovering youth addicts. The dance, sponsored by New Avenues for Youth here in Portland would be his first and maybe a step in the right direction for him.

Inspired and exhausted from watching Bruce Springsteen perform at the SB last night. I tracked down one of my favorite all time images I have ever taken. The Boss (circa 1979) when he was still doing audience surfing...I think he started the trend.

My job in college (at UT Austin) was to photograph all of the events at the Super Drum...not a bad job!

Those were glory days for sure. I cannot believe how many people were talking about Bruce last night, either who had been at that concert, or could remember every Bruce concert they ever when to. He really defined our youth.

I watched the inauguration with 1st and 2nd graders at the Sunnyside Environmental School here in Portland with my son's class. As a journalist, I so wanted to be in the middle of the mall, on the steps of the capitol, where the story was. But, today, I did have a strong feeling that I was in the middle of the story. In a darkened, public school auditorium, 6 and 7 year olds watched the speech by the president who would shape their vision of all presidents. They will, most likely, always believe that anyone of any color can be our president. Nice place to watch the inauguration.

While working on a personal project on a neighborhood farm, this girl and some friends showed up from down the street. I loved her band-aid. I knew there was a story behind the band-aid. Funny. I just starting shooting photos of her without introducing myself or telling her what I was doing. Sometimes the moment is lost if you get to know someone first. I guess it might seem rude, but somehow I am able to disarm...practice I guess.

She was so open and so raw...I wanted to capture just that.

Oh yeah, the story of the band-aid. Well, apparently she had gotten in a fight with a boy at school...he sliced her face and then she sat on him. He ended up crying. End of story. She was a tough girl... at a Waldorf school. Funny. Great meeting...camera in hand.

DO 1 Thing!

Homeless youth...you see them around, often they look pretty rough...you don't approach them...they live in their own world and you, yours. Do1Thing invited me to approach those kids and help tell their stories for a wonderful collaborative project. DO1Thing is a nationwide effort between photographers and journalists that raises awareness of homeless teenagers and encourages individuals to do one thing to assist them on Valentine's Day 2009. I made this image of the hard-working hands of a tile maker in a small, isolated building in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. Martin was making all of these beautiful tiles to be shipped to high end stores in the US. He had very little English and I very little Spanish...but Martin had a great smile and welcomed me in to take photos and learn his process. Martin represented, to me, the story I tell my son about Santa.

The story of Christmas at our house is, of course, about the magic of Santa but also about how we celebrate Santa and the Elves as representatives of all of the workers of the world who make the things we use everyday...how they/we are all special and an important part of the cycle .

It will be the Elves I will celebrate this year.

The number of magazines published and websites dedicated to the dramas of the famous (or what Obama had for breakfast) is growing...and we keep buying and watching. Meanwhile stories told by photojournalists on sites such as Kobreguide and MediaStorm don't get nearly the attention they deserve. The "little people" are struggling and I want to tell their story.

In a recent NY Times Magazine article about George Carlin...I found some words to my thoughts.

"I am tired of being told who to admire in this country," he said... "Aren't you sick of being told who your heroes oughta be? Bein' told who you oughta be lookin' up to ? I'll choose my own heroes, thank you very much."
